What Exactly is RAM, and What Does it Accomplish?

What Exactly is RAM, and What Does it Accomplish?

The Term 'RAM' can mean a number of different things, but in computing, there is only one true definition: Random Access Memory, and it’s a significant component in your computer. But what exactly does it accomplish, and what role does it play in ensuring that your business stays productive and efficient? Let's examine below.

What is Random Access Memory Exactly?
Random Access Memory is a component in your device that permits it to store and retrieve data. Data is accessed randomly instead of sequentially, which allows for a faster loading time compared to other types of data storage such as from a tape or hard drive. RAM requires a constant flow of energy in order to function, though, so the more you have of it, the more powerful a PC you will need. All data stored in the RAM is gone if the device is turned off.

What Does RAM Do?
Basically, RAM makes your computer work faster by storing data within it. The first piece that boots up is usually your operating system, which will then be stored in the RAM. Next, any programs opened up will go through the same process. RAM is the component that allows not just your operating system, but any other software in use to be run with it. When you run too many programs with not enough RAM, your computer may become slower or programs may crash. This is a result of running too much software running without enough resources devoted to keeping them running.

How Do You Know if you Need More RAM?
If your computer is consistently slower when a few programs are open, you probably need more RAM. Nonetheless, you shouldn’t implement RAM without first identifying whether or not there are other underlying causes of the slowness. It’s best to reach out to technology professionals, such as the ones at Macro Systems, before investing in new components for your workstations.

Don’t let your organization’s technology hold it back from being as productive as possible. For more information about how your business can upgrade your technology so that it becomes a benefit and not a detriment, reach out to Macro Systems at 703-359-9211.
